Comment on the obituary of Flight Lieutenant Dennis Bryden pilot shot down in 1944 […] in the Telegraph 11 November 2021.
“Bryden […] and his crew took off from Brindisi on the night of September 10 1944 to drop supplies to the Polish underground movement in Warsaw.”
‘Movement’?!
This sentence is a serious distortion. On August 1 1944 Polish Home Army, the largest resistance organization in Nazi-occupied Europe launched an uprising in Warsaw. The aim was to liberate the Polish capital before the arrival of Russian Communist forces. Russians did not want to help the Polish fighters despite being just across the river. Neither did they allow the British to land and take off from airfields east of Warsaw in Communist-controlled territory. Hence the decision to fly supplies to Warsaw the long way from Brindisi. Long, difficult, dangerous flight.
May you rest in peace.
