I noticed you will be teaching the course on Polish language, literature and culture of Poland in the coming academic year. On the cover of your handout is a picture of the Palace of Culture and Science imposed on Poland and Warsaw by Stalin’s Soviet Union. My wife is pianist and I am a physicist, culture and science. I and my wife were both dismissed from our jobs at the end of 2015 for political reasons. Typical communist methods were applied.
So, the Stalin’s club still stands in the center of Warsaw. It houses cultural institutions and the headquarters of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Nobody in the post‐1990 public life saw anything inappropriate in PAN staying in that building. The “Palace” was even made the centerpiece of visual decorations of the evening news program (7:30 PM CET) of TVP 1, the main public tv channel. We pointed this out in a letter to prime minister Kopacz last year.
My mother’s cousin was dismissed from his post at the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw in mid‐1970s as a result of political provocation, although as far as I know he was not engaged in any political activity.
The stalinist “Palace” is obviously considered an important contemporary communist shrine. Here is a small portion of bitter truth. Enclosed is a release my wife and I wrote recently. The Solidarity trade union was created by communist intelligence service in order to make a controlled change of public decorations, keeping the substance of their power intact. Political parties in Poland are fake creations.
